Bath bombs.

How Bath Bombs Can Harm Your Plumbing

Bath bombs can turn any regular bath into a spa-like experience. While some are comprised only of condensed salts featuring one or more beautiful colors, others also have oils, flower petals, glitter, and other elements that take your bath experience to a new level. Before you drop another bath bomb into the water, however, you need to know how these products can damage your home’s plumbing system and what you can do to prevent the need for serious plumbing repairs.

How Bath Bombs Damage Your Plumbing

Bath bombs are supposed to entirely disintegrate. Therefore, the basic bath bombs that lack flower petals and other special ingredients should not pose an issue for your plumbing system after you drain the tub. However, even these basic products can be problematic if they do not dissolve fully. After all, the salty or gritty material can accumulate in the drain or pipe.

When you add the other decorative ingredients, such as oils and glitter, the likelihood that a clog will develop over time increases dramatically. In some cases, a single bath bomb can wreak havoc entirely on its own. In other cases, the debris from the bath bomb may combine with remnants from other bath bombs as well as from hair, body oils, and other substances that may already be partially accumulated inside the pipes. The result is a major blockage.

What You Can Do to Protect Your Plumbing System

You can still enjoy a relaxing, aromatic bath from time to time with the following precautions:

  • Make sure that the bath bombs you use are free from solid ingredients that will not dissolve, such as glitter.

  • Place bath bombs in a stocking hose and cinch at the top. This will prevent small bits from going down the drain.

  • As a preventative measure, flush the drain with a mix of hot water, vinegar, and baking soda.

  • Schedule professional drain cleaning and maintenance services regularly.

You do not need to give up one of your favorite ways to relax. If your pipes haven’t been professionally cleaned recently, schedule service before you use another bath bomb. To schedule your appointment with Always Plumbing Heating and Air call (949) 523-1992.
